“Christmas! 'Tis the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.”—Washington Irving
With all of the winter holidays and activities, commitments, and to-do lists that accompany them upon us, it can feel as though we’re spinning plates as we slide into December. This time of year, I find solace in tending to small projects, such as decorating the mantle, sending flowers to loved ones, or shopping for stocking stuffers.

Coincidentally, the tradition of stuffing treats into a stocking, or other hosiery, hung by the fire with care, dates back centuries, according to Smithsonian Magazine. With a bit of poking around the web, it’s easy to go down the rabbit hole of all things Santa Claus and the folklore swirling around the twelfth month of the year. I’ll save you some time and share that much of the stocking lore revolves around a tale regarding a widower and his three daughters: Saint Nicholas dropped coins down the chimney, and into the girls’ socks they slid. Boom. The tradition was born.
